His Marriage Gamble by Nancy Fraser - Book Blast and Giveaway

Felicity Beaumont, the rebellious daughter of Louisiana elite devises a plan to move her father’s illegally owned slaves north to safety using the gambling river boat known as the Lucky Lady. Dressed as a young farm boy, she attempts to sell family heirlooms to raise the funds she needs. Short the full amount, she continues her ruse and bargains her way aboard the boat as their chaperone.

Charismatic owner of the Lucky Lady, Jake McAlister doesn’t trust women, and when he discovers Felicity’s subterfuge, he remembers exactly why.

While they find themselves in agreement about helping the free men and women, they are at odds over everything else, including their quickly escalating feelings for one another. When caught between Felicity’s powerful father and the ire of a local judge, they’re forced into a marriage neither wanted.

Can they make the best of a bad situation? And, will gambling on love be a bust or reap them both a happily ever after?

Excerpt

Jake McAlister lifted his foot to the railing above the Lucky Lady’s stern and lit a thin cheroot, its tip glowing bright red in the dark night sky. His cargo hadn’t yet arrived, and he felt the first stirring of concern. He’d asked permission to dock at this unfamiliar port under the guise of making some repairs. To overstay his welcome would draw attention he didn’t want or need. He’d give them twenty minutes and then…

“Excuse me, are you Jake McAlister?”

Jake raised his head. A young boy of no more than fifteen or sixteen stood before him. “Can I help you, kid?”

“I’m here to arrange passage for some of my friends.”

The boy coughed out his words, and Jake had to stifle a chuckle at the lad’s attempt to hide the obvious changes in his voice. “You’re the one who contacted me?” Jake asked.

“Yes.” The boy shuffled nervously from one foot to the other and kept his gaze narrowed on the ship’s deck.

“And, just where are these friends of yours?”

The boy let out a shrill whistle and a long line of blacks came out from behind a nearby building, first the men, then the women and, finally, the children. They arrived carrying their worldly belongings in a few large satchels, a handful of worn burlap sacks and, surprisingly, one rather expensive-looking steamer trunk. Jake counted heads as they came on board.

“I count four men, six women, and sixteen children. At fifty bucks a head for the adults and twenty for the children, that comes to eight hundred and twenty.”

“That’s right,” the boy confirmed, “how much extra for me?”

“I don’t take spectators on these runs, boy. The agreement is to take the blacks north to freedom. From the looks of them, they don’t need a caretaker, unless it’s to help them read.”

“My friends all know how to read, Mr. McAlister. And write.”

“Then they don’t need you, do they?”

“I’ve got the money.”

“Which you are going to give to me.”

Sentinels of the Night by Anita Dickason - Book Tour and Giveaway

About the Book

FBI Tracker Cat Morgan has an unusual talent, one she has successfully concealed, even from her fellow agents. That is—until she finds a body with a strange symbol carved on the forehead during a stop in Clinton, Mississippi and crosses paths with the town’s rugged police chief, Kevin Hunter. Despite his instant attraction to the sexy agent, Kevin is suspicious of her presence at the crime scene and isn’t buying her dubious explanations. He wants her out of the investigation and out of his town.

The discovery of another mutilated body with the same symbol sends Cat back to Clinton, and this time she isn’t leaving. To stop the killer, Cat must find a way to overcome Kevin’s distrust and will face an impossible impasse—truth or lies. But will either one matter, when the killer fixates on her for his next sacrifice?

Excerpt

The air reeked with the stink of marijuana. Blackened matches, remains of joints, empty plastic bags, and beer cans littered the kitchen table and floor. He pushed the burnt stubs around to find one large enough to light. What was left crumbled to ashes. Damn, the weed’s gone.

At least, he still had beer and grabbed one from the refrigerator, cracked the lid, then chugged half the can. Even though the cold liquid eased the raspy pain in his throat, he needed something stronger than beer.

Old prescription bottles filled the drawer under the bathroom sink. He shoved the containers around until he spotted one labeled Vicodin. Yeah, there were still a couple left. His hand trembled as he shook one out and popped it in his mouth. Head tilted back to swallow, his eyes drifted to the mirror over the sink.

The sight caused him to gag, and the pill caught in the back of his throat. Another face overshadowed his image. The gleam of eyes, dark with hatred, stared at him. A tremor of panic made him look over his shoulder. No one was there. JD leaned toward the mirror. The swish of a bat, then a scream echoed in his head. Images flickered, the knife, a face, blood splatters flying in the air, and a voice laughed. Terrified, the can slipped from his hand. Clanking, it rolled around the sink.

He rubbed his hand across the mirror trying to wipe away the image as he shouted, “No, no, you can’t be here, you’re dead.”

Interview

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

When I decided to write my first fiction novel, what to write wasn’t a problem. Since I am a retired cop, I’d write about what I know; crime.

Developing the characters was more difficult. I have always been intrigued by characters with a special edge to overcome danger and adversity. How could I add that special ability and make it unique? Over the years, I have spent countless hours reading about the myths of the Native American Indians as well as Scottish and Irish folklore. It was in those ancient stories that I found my paranormal abilities.

In Sentinels of the Night, I created a new FBI team, code name—Trackers. Each of the agents has a different ability, a secret that defies logic and reason. Agent Cat Morgan has an uncanny gift based on a Native American myth. As for the plot, it is based on my encounter with a serial killer. That experience shaped the character in the book. The book trailer highlights the eerie nature of Cat’s talent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m00v2W4K4o

What 5 words would you use to describe your main characters?

Cat Morgan and police chief Kevin Hunter square off in Sentinels of the Night. In their first encounter, the sparks fly. Despite their different personalities, they are tough, tenacious, ethical, intelligent, and intuitive.

What are your future ambitions?

I had an amazing career with the Dallas Police Department and would do it again in a heartbeat if that was possible. When I retired, though, I didn’t believe I would find anything I enjoyed more than being a cop. But I did. Every aspect of writing and publishing has brought new and exciting experiences, and I hope I can continue to add to what is a new career.

What exciting story are you working on next?

I have finished the second Tracker novel, Going Gone! Tracker Ryan Barr, the unit profiler, is on the hunt for the children of high-ranking politicians who have been kidnapped. The story is action packed and intense from the opening scene when one of the children escapes and is rescued by an ex-homicide detective turned private investigator Kerry Branson. The book trailer has an amazing sound track that ramps up the action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGI9MzkBkSE

I have started a third. It doesn’t have a title yet. My titles come from a word or phrase in the story and so far, inspiration hasn’t struck. Tracker Adrian Dillard is sent to Laredo, Texas to investigate the disappearance of an ATF agent. What he discovers sends shockwaves through the law enforcement community and the White House.

What sacrifices have you had to make to be a writer?

I am fortunate there have been none. As I am retired, my hours are flexible. I can spend as little or as much time as I want. If anything, I have found I am working harder than I ever did as a cop. I started a new business, Mystic Circle Books & Designs, LLC. I provide manuscript and designs services to help other authors publish their manuscripts. I just finished an illustrated children’s book. I am promoting my two novels which is a labor-intensive project. I also have a column, On The Hunt, in Indie Authors Monthly magazine. I write articles on publishing. The same column can be found on my website. All in all, my days are abuzz with activity.

Where is the best place you’ve traveled to?

I spent about two weeks touring Scotland. I stayed at some very intriguing bed & breakfast inns. One had beams in the ceiling that came from a sailing ship that were over 400 years old. There was such a sense of history everywhere I went. It was during that time I fell in love with the folklore.

Thank you for hosting my book.

All Inclusive by Farzana Doctor - Book Tour and Giveaway

About the Book

A story about an all-inclusive resort, the ghost of an unknown father, and the tragedies we can’t forget.

What’s it like when everyone’s dream vacation is your job? Ameera works at a Mexican all-inclusive resort, where every day is paradise — if “paradise” means endless paperwork, quotas to meet, and entitled tourists. But it’s not all bad: Ameera’s pastime of choice is the swingers scene, and the resort is the perfect place to hook up with like-minded couples without all the hassle of having to see them again.

Despite Ameera’s best efforts to keep her sideline a secret, someone is spreading scandalous rumours about her around the resort, and her job might be at stake. Meanwhile, she’s being plagued by her other secret, the big unknown of her existence: the identity of her father and why he disappeared. Unbeknownst to Ameera, her father, Azeez, is looking for her, and they both must come to terms with the reason why he abandoned her.

A moving new work from award-winning author Farzana Doctor, All Inclusive blurs the lines between the real world and paradise, and life and death, and reminds us that love is neither easily lost nor found.

Excerpt

Nora’s place was a small room just around the corner from the coffee shop. Like my own,
a few blocks away, it had space for a desk, a dresser, and a single bed. She fiddled with her boom box, popped in a Duran Duran cassette, and then flopped onto the bed. She beckoned me over from where I stood awkwardly by the door. I sat gingerly beside her and she took my hand. I wasn’t surprised by the gesture; she’d slipped her arm through mine on the walk over.

She leaned in close and I could tell she wanted me to kiss her. How unshrinking and
unafraid Canadian girls were! I pushed my face into hers, and didn’t breathe for a long time. I
wrapped her in my arms and she let me hold her tightly.

We talked and kissed for hours. My fingers groped her soft waist, the downy peach-fuzz on
her arms. When I gazed into her eyes I sensed a rare and special connection. And then suddenly we were tearing away our clothes.

In my fantasies, it would have happened in cinematic slow motion. Unhurried, we’d have
progressed to that point over several romantic dates. And when the disrobing finally happened it
would be an alluring striptease. Perhaps in reality things always move more quickly.

I left soon after the sex, lying to her about needing to get work done. I never did tell her
that I would be on an airplane the following afternoon, but rather, I’d remained vague about my
departure, speaking about the future as though it were more expansive than it was. Perhaps I
didn’t want to disappoint her.

I promised to call the next morning. Maybe we’d go for an early lunch. She gave me her
number and, foolishly, I forgot to offer mine.

Guest Post

Ten Things I Learned While Writing Sex Scenes

As a novelist and poet, I’ve always written about sex, at least to some degree; I’ve described flirtation and lust, sexual orientation and identity, erectile dysfunction, teen sexual angst, unrequited love and middle-aged romance. Many readers would say that the sexuality of my first two novels Stealing Nasreen and Six Metres of Pavement was present, but understated and tame.

Perhaps this is the way of literary fiction? Sex scenes are supposed to service plot and must not cross the line into what could be considered gratuitous. That line is an elusive and subjective one.  In literary fiction, it’s not unusual for characters begin to make out, and then suddenly, an imaginary curtain closes, chapters end, and it’s up to the reader to figure out what happened next.

I wanted to try something different with my third novel, All Inclusive; I wanted to take risks. So I made my main character a woman who is exploring non-monogamy and bisexuality through the swinger scene at the Mexican all inclusive resort, where she works as a tour representative. As I started out, I knew that that unconventional sex would be a metaphor for my protagonist’s growth, a vehicle to show her character, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t mute Ameera’s sex life in any way. I wanted to show the good, bad, awkward and messy of it and avoid writing clichĂ©s and stereotypes. I would not allow an imaginary curtain to obscure any of it.

Here are a few things learned I learned along the way:

1) Most of us have had very little true sex education. Chances are that we’ve learned half-truths and fiction from television, movies, school, health care providers, misinformed peers, lovers, religious leaders, and family members.

2) Sex is not always erotic or romantic. It’s often awkward, disappointing, and clumsy.

3) People worry about sex. A lot. Are we having too little or too much? Is it the right kind? Is our lover the right gender(s)? What if we are doing it wrong or are bad at it?

4) We are often told (women and girls, especially) to guard our sexuality. We are urged to keep it “safe”, to set limits and boundaries, to protect ourselves. And if we go to far, we are prudes. If we are victimized, it’s our fault.

5) On the other hand, we aren’t taught about how to liberate our sexuality: how to find our pleasure, our joy, our play.

6) We are led to believe that common is normal, and uncommon abnormal.

7) Sex intrigues us and we can’t get enough. Don’t we use sex to sell everything? But if we show that we are intrigued or that we are getting enough (or more than enough), we will be shamed for it.

8) Most people experience talking about the boundaries of sex—things like condom/barrier use, activities they don’t want, STIs, places on the body they don’t want touched, best ways to check-in about consent—as uncomfortable, or interruptions. And we also don’t talk about how often these boundaries get violated.

9) How we are socially located matters. Our experience is always mediated by our size, skin colour, abilities, age, genders, sexual orientation. Sex is about the body, but also about society and how it values or devalues us.  We can be validated through sex, but also shunned, silenced and shamed.

10) Emotions are tricky! Sex brings us into one another’s intimate spheres. What do we feel when we are there. What if our lover(s) don’t reciprocate?

So what did this mean to me as I wrote All Inclusive’s sex scenes? I found myself bumping up against my own biases, past learning, and current foibles about sexuality. I had to notice where I flinched, laughed aloud, or became blocked. I had to reeducate myself about sex all over again.

Readers have told me (my father, included, but that’s another story) that there was too much sex in All Inclusive. Others have told me there wasn’t enough.  One book club member blushed and told me that it “pushed her envelope” but that was a good thing.

Editors will often tell writers to not write sex because no one gets it “right”. Did I? I’m not sure, but Ameera offered me the best sex education ever.

Run to Her by Lynn Kellan - Book Tour and Giveaway

About the Book

She avoids men like him. He needs a woman like her. One lie changes everything...

Gabriel Antonov is a mechanic who can fix anything, even a woman’s hesitance. His talents have earned him the well-deserved reputation as a player, but when a routine one-night stand goes wrong, he’s haunted by what he’s done. Nothing can free him from those depraved memories, until he meets Leigh Nelson.

Leigh avoids strong, silent types like Gabe, who is stronger and quieter than most guys. The only man she’s focused on is her father, who is suffering from a devastating health crisis. She’ll do anything to help him, even at the cost of ignoring her own well-being, but the stress is getting to her. Gabe’s strength is tough to resist, and his silence might be hiding a crushing secret only she can understand.

He can’t outrun his gut-deep craving for her. Problem is, she’s running from him. When they’re marooned in his lakeside cabin, he might finally catch her…if he can admit why he’s falling apart without her.

Excerpt

“I’m here to speak with the owner of this place. A friend of mine set up the meeting.” Leigh glanced at the clock on the wall, which read half past five. “I’m very early. We’re supposed to meet at six.”

“Hold tight and I’ll get him. He’s in the kitchen.” The waitress strolled across the room, opened a door, and poked her head inside. “Your appointment is here.”

The metallic clank of a spoon against the edge of a bowl echoed into the restaurant, followed by a deep bark of laughter. A man walked out, carrying a heaping plate of fries that would clog the arteries of a lesser mortal.

Leigh’s stomach growled, willing to clog a few arteries for those fries…and that man. He was tall, built like an Olympian, and looked like—whoa, hold the phone. He looked like Gabriel Antonov, which couldn’t be possible. Gabe lived in Philadelphia, a few miles away from her apartment. There was no reason he’d be this far north of the city. He owned a busy auto repair shop that devoured most of his time. An Internet search for ‘brawny workaholics’ would put his name near the top of the results page.

When she’d seen him a few mornings ago, he hadn’t mentioned that he might head into the mountains for the weekend—but he never chatted about his plans.

He didn’t chat about anything.

She took advantage of her semi-hidden position by the cash register to gobble him up with her gaze. Faded blue jeans clung to his long legs like water, rippling with every flex of his muscular thighs. A gray T-shirt hugged a burly torso that could have graced the home page of a fitness website. Thick black whiskers darkened his sturdy jaw, which made him look ferocious in a hold-on-to-your-ovaries kind of way.

His dark eyes landed on her and he slowed to a stop. “Hey, Leigh.”

“Hi.” She gave him a puzzled grin. “What are you doing here?”

One side of his mouth tilted up. “Waiting for you.”

“But I’m supposed to meet the owner of this place.”

“You just did.”

Of course. She ran into Gabe everywhere, so why not here? He smelled like crispy fries and pine forests, two of her new favorite things. If she could fuse those scents into a cologne, she’d call it Spud Stud and sell the fragrance at Christmas. She’d make millions. “I didn’t expect to see you, tonight.”

“I didn’t tell you I’d be here, for good reason.” His deep voice bottomed out to a low murmur. “If you knew I owned this place, you might not show up.”

His square-jawed, Slavic features made him look like he was made of concrete and steel. Immovable. Not going away, even though Leigh had turned him down every time he’d asked for a date. Part of her wanted to hug him for not giving up. The other part wanted to sprint out the door, because she knew he carried a heavy secret. She had one, too. The weight of that burden had driven her into a psychologist’s office two months ago, where she’d bumped into Gabe. Literally. She’d collided face-first into his hard, broad chest. He’d taken one look at her, turned as gray as dishwater, and left.

She’d never mentioned the encounter and neither did he, but she wondered why she kept running into this man. Like now. “There must be a mistake. I’m here to pick up a book. My friend told me to come here.”

“You must be talking about Darlene, right? I saw her a few days ago when she dropped off her car for an oil change. She said you’re looking for a vintage copy of The Twisted Claw. I’ve got one. You can have the book if you’re willing to make a trade.”

“Oh.” Darlene hadn’t mentioned a trade. She hadn’t revealed that Gabe would be here, either. Typical. Darlene loved surprises, especially if they unnerved people. Leigh clasped her hands behind her back and frowned. Usually, she bought the vintage books for a few bucks. She’d never bartered for one. “What do you want in exchange for the book?”

“Dinner with you.” He plucked a menu off the counter.

The Singer and the Charlatan by D.C. Fergerson - Book Tour and Giveaway

About the Book

Leanna Moonbody dreams of playing at the Saul Amphitheater. With just one adventure to fund her trip, she meets up with a priestess that dreams of a massive flock to take on a pilgrimage. Together, Leanna will set up the crowds, and Priestess Trixi will bring them to Our Lord.

With an elf, dwarf, rogue, pixie and a paladin on their side, they set out to realize both their dreams. They just have to maneuver past a lovesick noble, the clergy, a deranged halfling that can’t seem to die, and a plague.

What could possibly go wrong?

Excerpt

“Ooh, this is exciting,” Leanna said with a smile, grabbing up Tear and Jonathan’s hands.

With the circle complete, Trixi looked to the ceiling.

“Lord. Oh, Lord, who is great and true. Take this offering of Form R226 and whatever leftovers we have here from dinner. Commune with me so that I may be a better Fawnspear, walking the path of truth. May it be really, really funny.”

With that, the scroll burned away before their eyes. Then, nothing. The silence became awkward.

“Did it not work?” Jonathan asked.

“Quiet,” Trixi demanded, turning her ear to the table.

The faint sound of terribly boring music filled the space all around the table. Any old ear would think it came from the building next door, but the trained ear of a Thistlite knew better. She listened to the song for a moment with her eyes closed.

Leanna joined in, leaning in to try and make out the tune. Suddenly, a loud voice spoke out, scaring her so bad she almost fell out of her chair.

“Our Lord is currently speaking with another faithful! You are very important to Our Lord! Your prayer shall be heard in the order it was received!”

Leanna broke the circle. “Oh, come on! Why did that have to be the loud part?”

“Leanna, you must be quiet,” Trixi whispered. “I’m sure he’ll be here soon.”

Interview

What should readers expect when they pick up your book?

They should expect a fully-realized fantasy world, and a group of characters that are about as insane as the world they live in. From Priestess Trixi’s bizarre religion and its many rules, to Leanna Moonbody’s complete apathy toward her amnesia, the paladin Sante’s happy-go-lucky cluelessness, and Tear, the elven sorcerer with an anxiety disorder, it’s a madhouse, and we’re all along for the ride.

Tell us about the cover and the inspiration for it.

It’s funny you should mention that. In this day and age, some of the best fantasy artists out there are just a click away. So many of them were just so far out of my price range, I opted to make the cover myself. It’s got the classic fantasy font style and I went with an aged leather book texture to add to its appeal. The image on the cover is Leanna sitting on a bar stool in Top’s Inn, and we can see Priestess Trixi has crossed out her ‘Tips Appreciated’ sign in her guitar case to read ‘Tithes Appreciated’, what I thought was a playful nod to the relationship they have in the book - Leanna sets up the crowds and Trixi brings them to ‘Our Lord’.

What’s next for you?

Book two, The Princess and the Holy Juggernaut  will release in late February/early March. While I’m wrapping work on book three, I’ll be publishing what I call an ‘anti-romance’ novel called Horses on the Wind in spring/summer. 2017 is going to be a busy year for me.

Three of your all time favourite books?

That’s pretty easy. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams, and Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk.

What would make you not finish a book you're reading?

Growing up, I devoured stageplays. I must have read every major stageplay penned between 1940 and 1960 in my senior year of high school. As such, dialogue is so key for me, and it reflects in my dialogue-centric writing. I love conversations that feel real and organic. So if conversation seems forced or I feel like I’m reading two-dimensional people exchanging lines, I’m probably going to drop it quick. In my three favorite books I mentioned, every one of them has a genuine feel of coming from a layered, complex personality and a distinct voice. I love that.

What do you hope your writing brings to readers?

I want to give everyone a good laugh. Being a sci-fi fan first (fantasy was introduced when I was an adult), I loved the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, and I think Douglas Adams was brilliant. Fantasy hasn’t had much of that, a series that enjoys a spectacular plot while poking fun at its own genre. I really hope I can change all that.

Anything else you might want to add?

The Singer and the Charlatan is now available in ebook and paperback, and the paperback is so pretty! So please gobble it up and make sure to leave me a review, I love reviews! And of course, don’t miss out on The Princess and the Holy Juggernaut, Book Two of the Wicked Instruments, coming in a little over a month from now!

Thanks...

The minotaurs have kept Ayla and Deetra's people in chains for 200 years. With nothing left to live for, and a death sentence in her womb, Ayla trades her soul for a chance to break the curse which holds her people in slavery. Armed only with her faith, she and Deetra start a revolution, and bring about the return of the Goddess of Darkness.

Excerpt

The woman’s lips curved up in a smile but no lines formed in her cheeks. She looked like a living statue, and not one bit like her mother.

“Who are you?” Ayla asked.

The stranger leaned over Ayla, resting her palms on the altar. Her voice took on a hollow yet resonant quality. Her breath suffused the air with a heady fragrance like scented oils.

“I am the dark corner that hides those in need. The eternal ruler of the Abyss.”

“You’re a God?”

“I was once their Queen.”

“Am I dead?”

The Goddess kissed Ayla on the forehead with cold lips. “You are at His doorstep.”

“Where’s my mom?”

“The dead cannot hear your pleas. I have come in her stead, my child.”

Ayla never believed in the Gods. And if they did exist, she wanted nothing to do with any who would leave their people in chains.

“I’m not your child.”

The woman grabbed Ayla under the jaw, fingers digging into her cheeks. Her icy eyes remained impassive but her voice lowered threateningly.

“You are the daughter of Steelhorn, the grandson of Tor, who is my son. I am not just your mother, but the mother of every woman born from a breeding cabin.” The Night Goddess let go of Ayla’s jaw. The closest brazier’s flame shone blue in the Her black tresses. “I have waded through the River of Dreams to answer your call, and this is how you thank me?”

“I'm dreaming?” Ayla asked.

Interview

What should readers expect when they pick up your book?

Readers should expect an emotional experience. It starts off in Ayla’s darkest moment. But don't give up on her and you wont regret it. Ayla really transforms in this book and the reader joins her through the journey. She is faced with difficult decisions every step of the way, and some of them are shocking. But it is her resolve and courage that gets her through this story and I think the reader will enjoy that.

What was the hardest part to write in this book?

The combat scenes. How much detail is enough? How much is too much? In the end though, I think I did pretty well with them.

Which character is your favourite and why?

Deetra is my favorite. Her undying loyalty to Ayla is her greatest attribute. Everyone should have a friend who is so dedicated to them. Her willingness to do whatever it takes to protect Ayla demonstrates her love. I think loyalty and her indomitable nature make her a truly admiriable character.

What are you working on next?

I’m working on the next volume in the series, Exorcism of Light. The outline took me over a month to create and I’ve written parts of chapters already. I think it will change a bit as I go along, but overall, I have a solid direction for the next part of our characters’ journey.

Tell us about the cover and the inspiration for it.

A good cover makes a promise, and I tried to make sure it did that while touching on major themes of the book.  A lot of people don’t notice the shadow of the horns over the entire picture, which is meant to foreshadow the dream that Ayla has in Chapter Two and symbolize the looming threat of the minotaurs. The cover features the three most important characters the book, (all women) and was designed by Aleksandra Klepacka. Ayla has a hand over her belly as a nod to her pregnancy, looking scared and sad. The goddess is shown protecting Ayla, and Deetra stands apart from them, looking concerned for her friend.

What’s something unusual or fun that most people don’t know about you?

I am bipolar. Most people would avoid mentioning their mental illness, but it is who I am. My creative process can be fueled by mania or depression, and I used both to write the story. I won’t shy away from the potentially negative label of mental illness, but instead, embrace it. It’s my superpower, especially for writing. Some people might need a gallon of coffee or drugs to stay awake for three days – for me, it just takes a good dose of mania.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Outline your stories. A good outline is like a writing partner. You need something to keep you on track, and your outline can do that. It’s easy to write 20 chapters, each of them sounding like their own short story, but the outline keeps your ideas cohesive and helps you plan where you’re going and stay on that track.

About the Author

My deep and abiding love of fantasy began when I was six when I first saw the 1981 film Dragonslayer on VHS with my father. He loved fantasy movies too, but didn’t have the courage to be a dork about it like I did. That movie was a gateway drug that led me straight to the hard stuff - CS Lewis. I was far too young for such potency but by the time I was ten I had read the whole series. That’s when I found my first Dungeons and Dragons group. When I started playing, my friends and I used pre-made campaign settings and published adventures, but I quickly grew restless with their limitations and trite story lines. I needed my own persistent world: something adaptable to my whim and that no one else owned.

Back in my day, there was no internet, so I took out every book about castles and medieval history from the school library and read them in Math class (I'm still terrible at math as a result). I came up with an entire world and brand new history. I read books on cartography and hand drew maps of my new world. I created a cosmology, a hierarchy of gods, and the tenets of their religions. I read the Dungeon Master's guide a dozen times, and every fantasy novel I could get my hands on.

Then, one day, I sat down and told my friends, "Hey guys, wanna try my story instead?"
Even 15 years after the original D&D campaigns ended, former players tell me that they share our incredible stories with their children. I'm honored to say that most of those players still have their original character sheets 16-20 years later, and a couple have even named their children after them.

Now, I'm 39 years old and a loving father of 2 girls, and I still play those games on occasion. My passion has evolved into putting those ideas and amazing stories on paper for the whole world to enjoy. My first novel took me and co-author DC Fergerson 10 years to write and topped out at 180,000 words. Being too long and too complex, I finally ended the project and took its lessons to heart.

I learned that Dungeons & Dragons did not translate well into a novel. D&D made for great times, but also for some meandering plot lines, pointless encounters, and poor character motivations. No matter how memorable some of the moments were, if I wanted anyone to read my story, I needed to learn a lot more about writing.

I threw myself into being a full time student of novel crafting. I read every book on writing by Dwight Swain I could find. I paid Chuck Sambuchino (Editor for Writer's Digest) to critique and edit my older work. I took James Patterson's Masterclass, went to college, and joined online writing communities. All the while, I read my favorite fantasy novels again, only this time with a mental highlighter. I reworked my stories, outlined them, and decided to start from the beginning.

Many, many years later, I am in the final edit and proofreading stage of Dark Communion, the first installment of the Shadowalker Chronicles. My role as a father of two girls heavily influenced the characters I’d known for over 20 years, shaping them into women that my own daughters could respect. My characters took on a depth and quality that brings them off the page and into the minds of readers, because they have become all too real. I was privileged enough to work on two careers at the same time to accomplish this feat - a fun-loving and involved stay-at-home dad, and a full time writer.

About the Book

Laura Holland awakes in the middle of the night to see a stranger standing in her bedroom doorway. She manages to defend herself from the would-be rapist, though he threatens to return as he retreats. Traumatized with recurring nightmares, Laura seeks therapy and is exposed to a unique treatment called EMDR. She also seeks self-protection— buying a gun against the wishes of her husband. When Laura learns she could have gone to prison had she shot her fleeing assailant, she decides to write a hypothetical legal case using the details of that night. She enlists the help of criminal defense lawyer, Thomas Bennett, who proves to be well versed in the justice system but has an uncanny resemblance to her attacker. As the two work together to develop the story, Laura's discomfort escalates particularly when Thomas seems to know more about that night than he should. Reality and fiction soon merge as her real life drama begins to mirror the fiction she's trying to create.

Excerpt

“I told you I don’t want to see a psychiatrist,” I pushed back. “I just need more time. I’ll bounce back. You know I almost came in the house on my own today. Besides, if I see a psychiatrist, on every job application I complete in the future, I’ll have to check the ‘Yes’ box when they ask if I’ve had mental health treatment.”

“Jesus. No you don’t. You’re too innocent sometimes.”

He gently tapped me on the nose.

“You can check the box ‘No.’ Besides, if that’s the only thing stopping you, I think you should give it a try. Her name is Barbara Cole. I’ll take you to Houston’s afterward,” he added.

I ignored the bribe. “But what can she do that you can’t? All she’ll do is listen and you do that for me already. Psychiatrists are for people who don’t have friends or husbands to talk to.”

Chris shook his head.

“Please? Do it for me.”

The tone in his voice was different—more helpless than normal. Chris had been so understanding, so comforting this past month, especially considering I had been waking him every night. How could I refuse his request?

I sighed. “Okay,” I relented. “I’ll go.”

“One visit. That’s all I’m asking. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to go back. She’s a psychologist, by the way, not a psychiatrist. She does therapy, not drugs.”

He glanced at the clock. It was 3:30 a.m.

Chris grabbed Konk, my stuffed animal gorilla that I won at the state fair by outshooting him at the basketball game. He had sworn the scum running the game couldn’t take his eyes off my butt and let me win.

“Here’s Konk,” he said. “I’m going to finish my presentation since I’m up. I’ll just be in the office. Want the door open?”

“Yes,” I said as I wrapped my arms tightly around Konk.

“Hey, we’ll celebrate your first therapy visit and my signed contract, I hope, this evening.”

“You mean you hope my first visit?” I said with a playful smile.

He gave me a look—he was in no mood for jokes.

“Fine. Fine. I’ll go,” I assured.

“If you’re asleep when I leave, just come by my office after the appointment and we’ll head to dinner. Try to get some sleep. I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

Interview

What inspired you to write this book?

Like the main character, I was attacked by a stranger in my home in the middle of the night. In order to heal, I started to write about how I was feeling and what had changed in my life. At the time, I didn't know about EMDR therapy to heal from trauma, so used writing as a catharsis. Also like the main character, all I had for self-defense was a can of Mace. After the attack, I said to my brother-in-law, if I had owned a gun, I would have shot the guy as he left. My brother-in-law informed me that I was fortunate that I didn't - as the shooting might not have been a clear case of self-defense. That idea sparked my interest in learning about the criminal justice system and inspired me to write the hypothetical case portrayed in the book. The ending, which I won't spoil, was prompted by a question from my mother. Once you've finished the book, you can write to me at liz@lizlazarus.com and I'll tell you more about that.

What is your favorite scene in the book?

I have a few favorite scenes. Without giving too much away, I like when Chris and Laura go on their anniversary trip to Ellijay, Georgia. I also like with Laura and Vicki do some sleuthing. Some people have said the “sleuthing” scene seemed too bold for Laura, but I’d like to think that I made her so single-minded and determined that she threw caution and reason to the wind.

Tell us about the cover and the inspiration for it.

There’s a funny story about the man’s profile on my book cover. Years ago when I was at work, one of my colleagues decided to be silly and Xeroxed his face. (Let’s be glad he chose the face – could have been worse!) The picture came out so blurred and creepy that you couldn’t tell who he was. I actually saved that piece of paper and years later showed it to my graphics designer, Tracy Glenn, to use as the inspiration for the profile on the book.

Some people thought the profile shot was of Thomas, as in Thomas Barnette, my college friend and favorite singer who created the book’s theme song, Let Me Breathe. They do look similar, and yes his CD cover is a profile shot, but that was some unexpected serendipity. I actually hadn’t considered that we both used profile shots until I put the two side by side, and how interesting that they face each other! Now, if you ask Thomas, he may still swear it’s him.

As you can see, the Advance Reader Copy of FREE OF MALICE had only the profile, and the rest of the cover was black. My thinking was that in the age of so many “busy” covers, wouldn’t a plain one stand out? But then, after receiving advice from several people (Candy Brakewood, Lynn Epstein, and Esther Levine at Book Atlanta to name a few), I decided to add more color.

The bullseye was a natural choice as it was already part of our Website design and has significance in the book for two reasons. First, the Laura character takes shooting lessons at Sandy Springs Gun Club and Range and practices with a target. Secondly, Laura’s attacker had what looked like a bullseye on the back of his shirt—she got a glimpse of it as he ran away.

We offered up two choices of bulls-eye designs via social media and asked for votes. (Thanks to Jill Dible of Jill Dible Design for options A and B.)  Surprisingly, the race was nearly 50/50, but I had a stronger preference for Option A because it “pops”.

One comment I did take to heart from the voting was that the cover doesn’t fully describe the book, and I suppose that would be a challenge for any novel. It’s true, the cover doesn’t portray Laura’s therapy and healing, her trauma and suspicion, the hypothetical legal case or the racial tension. But maybe the eerie profile and the colorful bullseye will be enough to intrigue you to take a peek inside.

What exciting story are you working on next?

My book has a theme song written and sung by Thomas Barnette. Thomas and I met our first day at Georgia Tech and have been close friends ever since. I co-produced his debut CD and the song, "Let Me Breathe," is featured in Free of Malice. As you may have guessed from the book trailer on my website, www.freeofmalice.com, the character of Thomas Bennett is loosely based on my friend.

What is your favorite TV show?

Suits is about a law firm in New York:  “big-time Manhattan corporate lawyer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) hires the only guy who impresses him—college dropout Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams). The fact that Ross isn't actually a lawyer isn't lost on Specter, who believes his new right-hand man is a legal prodigy with the book smarts of a Harvard law grad and the street smarts of a hustler.” I love really clever shows and Suits does not disappoint. The plot line, characters and acting are superb, and this season is getting really hot as Mike’s secret has unraveled and he has been sent to prison.
