The dirty, worn-out sidewalks of Laredo Avenue turned into the cleaner, well-kept sidewalks of West Winter Street—a street that I had walked countless times before. Even 114 years later, the traffic pattern of West Winter Street had stayed mostly the same. Something about that warmed my heart.
A small group of girls were playing soccer in the middle of the road. The game of street soccer had survived the last century too. Just like any other classic game in the streets, they had to move aside as hover cars used the real road above them to travel. I had the urge to approach them in my best old-person voice and say, “You know, in my day, we had to get out of the way for cars that drove on the actual ground. We also had to walk ten miles to school in the snow, uphill, both ways.”
One of the girls stopped and stared at me, probably leery of a stranger approaching them. I immediately felt uncomfortable that I had been noticed watching their game. I tried to improve the situation by walking toward the middle of the road and handing a single daisy from the bouquet to each girl on the street. Despite my good intentions, each girl took one but eyed me even more suspiciously.
As I walked away, I kept my focus on the descending house numbers. I grew more anxious and excited with each domicile that I passed. When I finally reached the property of 242 West Winter Street, I put a hand over my mouth to stiffen a silent cry. It still looked perfect and untouched by the shades of time—a relic that was submersed within a neighborhood of upgrades. The familiar sight of it transported me back immediately.
I had to stop myself from running across the lawn and bursting through the front door, yelling, “I’M ALIVE!” Then Julie and Susan would look at me with relief and loving adoration.
