The dirty, worn-out sidewalks of Laredo Avenue turned into the cleaner, well-kept sidewalks of West Winter Street—a street that I had walked countless times before. Even 114 years later, the traffic pattern of West Winter Street had stayed mostly the same. Something about that warmed my heart.

A small group of girls were playing soccer in the middle of the road. The game of street soccer had survived the last century too. Just like any other classic game in the streets, they had to move aside as hover cars used the real road above them to travel. I had the urge to approach them in my best old-person voice and say, “You know, in my day, we had to get out of the way for cars that drove on the actual ground. We also had to walk ten miles to school in the snow, uphill, both ways.”

One of the girls stopped and stared at me, probably leery of a stranger approaching them. I immediately felt uncomfortable that I had been noticed watching their game. I tried to improve the situation by walking toward the middle of the road and handing a single daisy from the bouquet to each girl on the street. Despite my good intentions, each girl took one but eyed me even more suspiciously.

As I walked away, I kept my focus on the descending house numbers. I grew more anxious and excited with each domicile that I passed. When I finally reached the property of 242 West Winter Street, I put a hand over my mouth to stiffen a silent cry. It still looked perfect and untouched by the shades of time—a relic that was submersed within a neighborhood of upgrades. The familiar sight of it transported me back immediately.

I had to stop myself from running across the lawn and bursting through the front door, yelling, “I’M ALIVE!” Then Julie and Susan would look at me with relief and loving adoration.

Erin Michaelson spends her days teaching guitar and her nights on stage as her sexy alter-ego, Eva James. Music is her dream, her passion. Problem #1: The record label wants her to dump her band and move to L.A. Problem #2: She hadn’t counted on Chance Walker and the scorching heat of that first kiss. Excerpt

Eva James, or Erin, or whatever name she wanted to call herself, was a wild card. She burned bright, took chances, and followed her heart. And he wanted to taste that wild side with her.

When Eva James disappeared down the hallway that led to the restrooms, he got up off his barstool. He took one step before Mitchell’s hand landed on his right arm and Jake’s on his left.

“Whoa. Where do you think you’re going?” Jake’s shit-eating grin said he already knew the answer to that question.

“I’m going to get her.”

Derek burst out laughing. “Let him go. I gotta see this train wreck.”

“Screw you, Derek.”

Even Mitchell was grinning now, but he let go of Chance’s arm. “Go for it, brother. She’s going to love you, bad boy. Just so you know, that tie of yours can be used for all kinds of things besides wearing it in court.”

Derek was still chuckling. “We’ll have to pry her off your rebel ass with a crowbar.”

Chance flipped them all off and headed for the side of the stage to wait for her. He didn’t give a damn what any of his brothers said. So what if she wasn’t his normal type? Forget normal. He wanted her. He looked, and he wanted. End of story.

He was tired of playing it safe. Tired of taking care of other people’s problems. He needed a damn break. He wanted her to rattle his cage.

He wanted to talk to her, to touch her. And if she didn’t run scared? He damn sure was going to get her into his bed.

Excerpt

Sails snapped in the wind, ropes creaked and strained, and the Flora de la Mar moved through the thick fog bank. She was a fifteenth century three-masted square sail warship under the command of Beaumont Seabring, adventurer and time dimension traveler.

Seabring muttered under his breath. This fog was not natural. He was having a hard time keeping his bearings. The compass tattooed onto his forearm glowed and pulsed, but he could not get a clear reading. He removed his wide-brimmed leather hat and scratched his head before putting it back on again. Then he tugged at his beard and twirled the ends of his moustache, deep in thought. The warning system that encircled the compass was not flashing an alert, so the fog held no danger. At least, not any kind of danger he and the compass had encountered before. And yet they were powerless, being led to some unknown destination.

What do you think of e-books? Have they helped authors?

e-books have opened an amazing world of opportunity for authors to reach more readers than ever before. I remember having to wait weeks, and sometimes, even months, to finally get a copy of a new book from a favourite author. Even though I love technology, and the practicality of e-books, I have a love-hate relationship with them.

I love that because of e-books I can read many books in a shorter amount of time. I hate that I’m not totally convinced that’s a good thing.

I love that I can carry hundreds of books with me in my e-reader–especially when I’m travelling and space is an issue. I hate the way my eyes get tired and strained from reading a digital screen for a few hours.

I love that I can get a copy of a book quickly but I hate that I can’t snuggle up in my favourite chair and dog-ear pages that I want to go back to.

I love that author’s can self-publish their e-books in a timely manner–the process of creating a print book can take months from beginning to end. I hate that authors can publish so quickly. I sometimes miss the gap that used to exist between the release of books from authors.

I love print books. There is something so special about the smell of a book; the way the pages feel under your fingertips as you turn the pages; the soft sound it makes when placed on a bedside table; the way the cover starts to feel soft and worn after it’s been handled for a while. I hate that e-readers are one-dimensional and don’t offer a multi-sensory experience when reading.

I love the Green factor of e-books, less resources used are always better. I hate that print books aren’t as Green and use more natural resources to create.

I love that e-books seem to have more people reading–and sharing about what they are reading.

I love that I’m hearing people say they are starting to buy print books again.

I think that anything that gets people reading is a good thing–so, yes, I do think e-books have helped authors.

Thanks...

What readers just like you are saying about If We Were a Movie:

“WOW! This book is great! The concept is so inventive, and the writing is brilliant.”
“I thought Cinder & Ella jerked with my emotions too much but this one might have it beat.”
“I finished reading If We Were a Movie yesterday. I loved it! I fell hard for Nate. Jordan was amazing! And Pearl’s timing was perfect! “
“Amazing concept with movies as chapters, and fantastic storyline.”

“I loved this story and was humming along to the songs from the book whilst reading. I can see this book becoming the movie it was written to be.”

“If We Were a Movie made me want to binge watch movies, listen to old playlists and re-read it all at once.”

TEASER:
“So this is what a Pearl-approved guy looks like.” She shook her head once and cracked a smile. “She’s got good taste, I’ll give her that. You’re an odd mix of sexy and adorable. Don’t see that often.”
I was a little taken aback by the compliment, if that’s even what it was. She may have just been stating what she considered to be fact. She laughed at my surprise and held out her hand to me. “Nice to meet you. I’m Jordan Kramer.”
I’d been afraid of that. “You’re a girl.”
Jordan laughed. “That’s what it says on my birth certificate, but I’m really glad you were able to figure it out without needing to read it.”
Nope. I definitely didn’t need that.

TEASER:
I handed Jordan the electric guitar that I’ve had since I was twelve, and laughed when her eyes got really big. “You play the electric guitar, too?”

“Music major,” I teased, picking up my keyboard. “I play this, too. A little. And the bass guitar.”

“Awesome.” She examined the electric guitar with awe.

“Why do you seem so surprised?”

She looked at me as if the answer to that question should be obvious. “Hello. Have you met yourself? You with an acoustic guitar singing soft songs around a campfire or in a coffee house makes perfect sense. But I can’t picture you up on a stage, jamming on your electric guitar like a rock star.” She studied me a moment, then shook her head. “You’ll have to play for me, or I’m not going to believe it.”

Guest Post

The music and movies behind the story (Kelly’s If We Were a Movie playlist)!

As I’ve said many times before, I’m one of those authors who needs peace and quiet to write. I’m a music junkie at heart, and if there is music playing, I will sing (and most likely dance) along. Fun times, but as you can imagine, not the most productive writing environment. So while I’m working, I turn the music off. But I still always have a playlist for each book. It’s usually a group of songs that remind me of a scene, or a certain character, or just have the tone that I’m going for. And while I’m working on the book, I will wear the playlist out. (Just not during writing hours.)

If We Were a Movie, despite its title, is almost more about music than it is about movies. My main character, Nate, is a talented musician on scholarship at NYU. Music is an intrical part of the plot, and hits home for me personally as I was a music major in college too. (For a while anyway…) The playlist I have for this book is closer to an actual movie soundtrack than just a random list of songs this time. (Very fitting.) Most of these songs are referenced in the book as well as that they simply remind me of the story. As you read, feel free to listen along.

The book also has a movie playlist and you can watch along as well. As much as Nate is a music junkie like me, his love interest, Jordan, is a movie fanatic. (Like my Hollywood screenwriter/editor/motion graphics artist husband!) The book is all about comparing life to the movies, and is a play on all the classic romantic comedy tropes that we all love so much. There are dozens of movie references throughout the book. In fact, each chapter is titled after a different movie that has something to do with that chapter. I guarantee after the first couple of chapters you will be trying to guess what’s going to happen next based on the chapter headings! I’m not going to give you that list of movies right now, because it may spoil some of the surprises, but I promise it’s a fun list.

So, are you ready to listen to If We Were a Movie? Here it is in my personal playlist order: (Warning, this is my most eclectic playlist yet!)

  1. Fortune Days (The Glitch Mob)
  2. Take a Chance On Me (ABBA)
  3. Tears In Heaven (Eric Clapton)
  4. Jolene (Dolly Parton)
  5. Tompkin’s Square Park (Mumford & Sons)
  6. Lego House (Ed Sheeran)
  7. Hands All Over (Maroon 5)
  8. How To Save a Life (The Fray)
  9. Inconsolable (Backstreet Boys)
10. Cherry Pie (Warrant)
11. Under Pressure (Queen & Davie Bowie)
12. Zidler’s Rap (Various artists from the Moulin Rouge! Soundtrack)
13. Spontaneous Me (Lindsey Sterling)
14. Superman (Five for Fighting)
15. Clarity (Zedd ft. Foxes)
16. You Belong With Me (Taylor Swift)
17. Marry Me (Train)
18. If We Were a Movie (Hannah Montana)
