Nicole Graves finds herself in the crosshairs when she reluctantly agrees to babysit a witness in a high-profile rape trial. Mary Ellen Barnes is suing her university’s star quarterback for rape when the authorities won’t act. In the court of public opinion, Mary Ellen appears to be the quintessential, pious, good girl. But her lies and mysterious comings and goings lead Nicole to suspect that she’s not what she seems.

Read an Excerpt

Nicole called Detective Martinez. They agreed to meet at the morgue in an hour.

Nicole brushed her teeth, washed her face, and dabbed on some lipstick. Once she was in the car, she headed for the Hollywood Freeway, which would take her to East L.A. and Boyle Heights, where the morgue was located. She prayed that it was a mistake, that this body wasn’t Mary Ellen.

The coroner’s office had moved since Nicole’s visit years before. It was now housed in a grim, three-story building that loomed over several smaller wooden structures in the same complex. Nicole had read somewhere that the main building had once been Los Angeles General Hospital. With its brick façade, dingy gingerbread trim, and cupola-topped entry, it looked like a nineteenth-century madhouse.

She got out of the car and climbed the stairs to the entrance. She told a man at the front desk that she was meeting Detective Martinez, and he asked her to take a seat. The lobby was enormous, dimly lit, and filled with rows of wooden benches. They reminded her of the seating in a church, and she wondered if services had once been held here. More likely, it served as the old hospital’s waiting room. She perched on one of the benches; it was hard and cold. A notice on the wall said that the use of mobile devices was prohibited, and she dutifully turned off her phone.

The building was cool, and, to Nicole’s relief, the only discernable smell was a mixture of disinfectant and floor wax. It made her wonder where they kept the bodies—perhaps in one of the out buildings. The huge, gloomy room gave her a sense of unreality. This couldn’t have happened. Mary Ellen couldn’t possibly be lying in cold storage somewhere nearby.

‘Sorry,’ she said. ‘I don’t play ball.’

He hugged the ball close to his chest. He understood that. None of his sisters were into sport either. But, he loved his sports; it was a major part of his life.

‘What do you play then? I’m up for anything.’

She rubbed her hands against the afternoon chill, as her clear blue eyes met his. His heart hammered. They were the prettiest eyes he’d ever seen, and if he wasn’t careful his concentration would take a serious hit, and he’d sound like some daft prick.

‘I’m not very sporty. How did they go?’

Mike shook his head. ‘Another loss,’ he all but whispered.

She gave him a soft smile. ‘Oh, that happens. Are you having a reconnoitre with them?’

His lips quivered, but he couldn’t hold back. He let out a belly laugh.

She’s gorgeous. A one-off.

Gemma’s life was nearly perfect. She’s just graduated from college and is heading off to graduate school in the fall. She and her best friends are taking a trip she’s always dreamed about. Only, nothing goes as planned. After being chased on the streets of Dublin by a freaking monster, they get sucked into a portal and wind up on another world. As in, not Earth. Now she can’t find her friends, but there is this really hot, naked guy who calls himself a king and is offering her aid.

There’s only one teensy little problem: He says she’s his mate and is planning on keeping her—forever. Oh, and there’s one more thing: He’s a beast most of the time. And Gemma has to decide if she’s willing to give up everything for the one man she’s meant to be with in the universe.

Read an Excerpt

Moira’s scream joined Anna’s. It wasn’t a hallucination. It was a fucking monster, its wingspan wider than the street as it hovered above their heads. Great charcoal leathery wings flapped, generating enough wind to power a turbine. Its body was large, at least seven feet tall, its chest wider than a doorframe and completely bare. Its arms were muscular and thickly formed; she could imagine the thing benching tractor trailers as if they were toy cars. Its legs were hewn like tree trunks and covered by some sort of black material. But it was its hands that drew her attention. They were huge and tipped with claws. Its face appeared hard as granite, with two black horns curling at its temples. The thing’s eyes flashed with an inhuman silver.

It wasn’t human.

Well, duh? Score one point for the scientist.

It took every ounce of self-preservation inside Gemma not to upchuck. The Guinness still swimming in her veins, which had been warming her from the inside out, turned to frost. She shook. Fear unlike anything she had ever known settled over her. What the fuck was this thing? Why was it hovering over their heads?

“Run,” Gemma cried. She grabbed Moira’s and Anna’s hands when they didn’t move, too frightened by what they saw. Not that she blamed them. Gemma was terrified. Wanted to pee in her pants, she was so scared. But her survival instinct kicked into overdrive.

Perhaps it was the fact that Gemma had always been on her own. As an orphan, she’d had to rely on herself for the first half of her life. If Anna’s parents hadn’t fostered her and brought her into their home her freshman year of high school, she wouldn’t have known what a real family was supposed to be like.

She gripped her friends’ hands, tugging them with her. Their cries shuddered on weak gasps as they followed. Gemma took the right turn Anna had suggested moments before, hoping it would lead them in the direction of their hotel and safety.

Panic gripped her. The street they’d taken, that she had dragged her best friends down, wasn’t an escape. It was a trap.

About the Author: Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Anya grew up listening to Cardinals baseball and reading anything she could get her hands on. She remembers her mother saying if only she would read the right type of books instead binging her way through the romance aisles at the bookstore, she’d have been a doctor. While Anya never did get that doctorate, she graduated cum laude from the University of Missouri-St. Louis with an M.A. in History.

Anya is a bestselling and award-winning author published in multiple fiction genres. She also writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance under the name Maggie Mae Gallagher. A total geek at her core, when she is not writing, she adores attending the latest comic con or spending time with her family. She currently lives in the Midwest with her two furry felines.

"Is this the one then?" Braxton asked, drawing her back to the present.

She blinked at him. "The one?"

"The house you want to move into."

"Oh, I don't know. What do you think?" Priscilla joined him at the window.

He turned to her. "Well, the ground floor looks acceptable. Let's explore the upper level."

They climbed the stairs to find three good-sized bedrooms and a bathing room with a porcelain tub and sink.

"It's marvelous. Look, how lovely," Priscilla enthused running her hands over the porcelain.

Braxton smiled. Her pleasure lit up her face like a candle from within, rendering her more beautiful than ever. He hadn't thought that possible until now. "Yes," he said. "Gorgeous."

She laughed. "You're not even looking at the tub."

"No." He stepped close and cupped her face with his hands. "I'm gazing at you. You're gorgeous." He expected her to laugh, shove him away or maybe hit him. Instead, she simply gazed back at him, smiling. So, he kissed her.

When she didn't object, he did it again.

After he broke off the kiss, she grinned. "Don't look at me like that, Braxton. Even if I were willing, which I'm not, there's no bed here."

He faked a mournful sigh. "A pure shame isn't it?"

"It's getting close to time for me to start supper. We'd better go."

"Am I invited to eat with you?"

She started down the stairs. "All right. I suppose after giving me so much time this afternoon to look at houses, I owe you that much."

"If I'd known it was going to be that easy, I'd have tried for more," he muttered, following.

Priscilla reached the bottom step and froze.

"What's the matter?" Braxton asked, behind her. "Something wrong?"

"I'd say something's very, very right."

That familiar voice brought Braxton's head up with a jerk. Irish O'Malley leaned indolently against the fireplace. Logan Cash stood on the opposite side of the room. Both had six-guns aimed at him and Priscilla.

Giving his curious dragon some freedom, Jaxon stepped close and breathed in Amari’s scent. Cinnamon spice drifted through his nostrils and settled in his brain. She didn’t smell like an herbivore.

Interesting.

“Are you toying with this dragon?” he murmured in her ear.

She did not like him so near, her self-preservation instinct urging her to move away. Although pressed against a wagon wheel, she could have sidestepped out of his reach. But instead, she squared her shoulders and held her ground. Her entire body quaked, yet she stood before him with her chin thrust forward in defiance. Not normal behavior for a sheep.

Kip snickered at his back. “You’re losing your teeth, Jax.”

“Especially when a sheep challenges the great Jaxon Blackthorn, instead of cowering at his feet,” Crispin added.

Jaxon leaned closer, his mouth a hairsbreadth from the delicious curve of her neck. “Is that what you are? A sheep?”

Retribution by Diane Demetre - Book Tour and Giveaway

A gripping romantic suspense of betrayal, hope and love.

Jessie Hilton is tough. Since the age of fifteen, she has dreamed of being a principal dancer with the Australia Ballet Company. Now at twenty-four, she stands on the brink of fulfilling her dream unaware of a secret buried deep within her.

Ex-military officer, Brad Jordan is rebuilding his life with the help of his boisterous Border collie, Whiskey. After helping Jessie out of a tight spot, he discovers a kindred spirit in the ambitious ballerina.

But with the sudden attention of an unwanted admirer, Jessie’s life begins to spin out of control. Called back to her family home in country New South Wales due to her father’s unforeseen illness, she is torn between career and family. As her dream of being principal dancer fades, her stalker edges ever closer. But there is more to overcome than a lurking psychopath. Can Jessie and Brad confront their own past demons and finally be free?

Award winning author, Diane Demetre writes genre-busting stories which delve deep into the human psyche, and Retribution is no exception. Winner of Romance Writers of Australia Emerald Pro Award for Best Unpublished Manuscript, Retribution is her first romantic suspense. If you love a cast of complex characters, a slow simmering romance and an intriguing plot, don’t miss this page-turning romantic suspense with a twist.

Excerpt

There she was, bolting up the hallway towards him like she did every time he returned. All amber eyes and happy face, she danced and pranced, speaking an exuberant welcome as best she could through her doggy larynx.

“How’re you doing, Whiskey? You miss me?” Reaching down, he rubbed his black and white Border collie’s lopsided ears. “You are the most beautiful girl I know. Come on, let’s chow down.” As he strode down the narrow hall of his weatherboard cottage, he weaved from side to side so as not to step on her paws. “So, what did you get up to this evening? Been protecting the castle?” He opened the fridge door and Whiskey shoved her nose in where she knew her dinner waited. BJ grabbed a bag of beef brisket bones and tossed it on the kitchen bench. He’d left the lights on out of habit, rather than for Whiskey. If there was light around him, the darkness within was somehow easier to bear.

He scanned the back yard, checking the perimeters that he’d planted with impenetrable, skyward-reaching bamboo. He never knew what he expected to find. Maybe he hoped it was all a bad dream and that everything would return to the way it was. But nothing would be the same again. Regret tore at his heart as he tore open the plastic bag of bones. “Here you go, girl. Take it outside. I’ll grab a beer and join you.”

Interview

What was the hardest part to write in this book?

I think the hardest part are the suspense scenes. They require tension and pace, so getting the rhythm of the words and sentence structure which keeps the suspense is probably the hardest. It requires a lot of editing and adjustment.

Which character is your favourite and why?

I love BJ. I used Chris Hemsworth as my inspiration for this character…not just physically, but emotionally. Chris has such vulnerability and authenticity about him and BJ needed that too.  Every scene I wrote with BJ in it, I visualized Chris Hemsworth. What a wonderful career I have

Where’s your favorite place to write?

In my purpose-built office which overlooks a canal on the Gold Coast in Australia. It is the most picturesque, tranquil  spot. And with my three dogs surrounding me, writing is a joy.

What are you working on next?

My next book, Island of Secrets is due for release 14 October 2018. If you love stories rich in emotion and fueled by intrigue, Island of Secrets will make you laugh, cry and capture your heart. An epic love story not to be missed…

Do you have a favorite quote?

If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavours to love the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. Henry David Thoreau

What profession would you choose if you were not an author?

An inspirational speaker and teacher

Any last words?

Dreams do come true

Thanks...

Through painfully-honest storytelling and candid conversation, Nate shares how years of mistakes and missteps uncovered a simple framework that reveals the greater purpose behind our everyday lives, and why the answers to life's deep questions are often backward from what we expect.

“Oh, shit.”

To this day, I’m not sure if I thought it, said it, or whispered it. I remember with certainty, however, feeling the heaviest, most crushing sinking in my stomach. I wanted that feeling to drag me down below the desk, through all 34 floors of drywall, and right into the basement where I could hide from the firestorm of anger that was sure to be unleashed on me. I had just let down the most trusting and encouraging vice president in the firm. I could own up to my own errors, but the report carried Chris’ reputation. I felt like I had just jammed a knife into Chris’ back.

I was red hot, trapped inside my own clothes. I wanted to run. I looked at my watch, hopelessly deliberating if I’d have enough time to make this right before Father Time declared midnight and decreed my mistake irreversible.

The silence in the room was deafening. I racked my brain for an explanation. I braced myself and came to grips with the fact that I’d watch my livelihood burn before me that night. I was marching toward the gallows. I was sure that my budding consulting career would spoil into nothingness as Chris moved Earth itself with his pent-up rage. I had no doubt that a tsunami of vitriol had been welling up inside of Chris, and my error had just triggered his ocean of wrath.

“Okay,” Chris said. “Let’s go home.”

I blinked. “What?” It was all I could muster

“Are you sure you want to do this?” As soon as the words fled his mouth, he realized how stupid they were. Of course she was sure. Nothing could stop such an elemental force of nature. She was Spirit Mother, walking amongst humans to teach him, Tal Pelletier, some of the many lessons he needed to learn.

“I…” She caressed her baby’s head. “No, I’m not sure. I lost all my certainties somewhere back in the tunnel.”

Belying her words, she reached for one of the massive, marrel-plastic door handles. Pulled. It was too heavy for her.

When he grasped the handle to help, his finger grazed hers. She froze. She was a slight woman with delicate, haunted features; she had to tip her head back to meet his eyes, almost as though asking for a kiss. Just as he needed her spirit’s strength, she needed his physical strength—but not his lust, which was tainted with anger and despair. Never that.

So he kept his lips to himself. Together, they pulled open a door onto the ghosts of a past that had never existed.

He blinked. Although the cavern’s lights were dim, they were too bright after the ventilation tunnel. The cavern smelled and felt different. The air in the ventilation tunnel was raucous and angry, but out here it was still with resignation.

Audra moved, startling him. She touched her forehead, the baby on her chest, then both shoulders. He puzzled over her movements for a moment but then recognized the sign of the cross. The gesture was perfect, showing that she realized the mystical power of the world of his ghosts. She was indeed a Spirit Guide, sent to help him overcome his demons.
