Excerpt

Okay, there is was. Looking no different than twenty-two years ago. A small opening in the woods marked by a gray, metal, utilitarian mailbox and a graveled trail that passed for a driveway in these parts.

I was home. Oh God help me. Please.

I depressed the brake pedal, leaving behind the paved surface and tried not to wince as what sounded like millions of tiny gravel bits pinged against the underside of my car.

The azaleas lining the drive still looked the same. The one at the very end caught my attention, I could have sworn it jiggled. Oh no, it couldn’t be. Surely it was impossible now.

Suddenly the bush jumped in front of the car.

I slammed on the brakes, pinning Olivia to the seat with my outstretched arm. In the fashion of mothers everywhere I was protecting my offspring from flying through the windshield by crushing her windpipe while invoking the Maternal Arm.

I looked toward the hood and the half-dozen bobbing azalea twigs in front. I sat resolved as they rose and wre followed by an old pith helmet and a face which looked a bit older than I’d remembered, although it was hard to tell precisely, given the layers of green and black greasepaint. A body followed, dressed in a set of ancient Army –issued fatigues.

“Gun,” Olivia croaked, pointing.

I simply nodded, there would be plenty of time later for my daughter to find out exactly what was swimming around in the waters of the gene pool from whence she’d sprung.

Revision is a Process - How to Take the Frustration Our of Self-Editing by Catherine E. McLean - Book Tour and Giveaway

About the Book

A first draft holds the possibility of what will be a great story. Revision turns that rough diamond into a spectacular gem worth a reader's money and time.

Writers are individuals but to be a producing writer means creating a system to revise and polish a work so the reader thoroughly enjoys the story. REVISION IS A PROCESS is a guidebook for writers and authors that shows how a simple 12-step process can be tailored to eliminate the most common and chronic maladies of writing genre fiction. This valuable guidebook contains secrets, tips, practical advice, how-to's, and why-to's for taking the frustration out of self-editing.

Excerpt

From Section 9 - Said is not Dead

One of the most controversial aspects of writing dialogue is the use of said as a speech tag. Some think using said is pedestrian and boring, others pepper every line of dialogue with said for fear the reader won't know who is speaking. The fact is that said is nearly invisible to a reader. However, overuse is a common problem, so delete as many as possible without jeopardizing clarity or use beats. (Revisit the Oubliette example on the previous page. Said was not used. Beats were.)

In your review to minimize using said, watch for LY or ING ending speech tags like: "Drop dead," she said dramatically. That tells (and does so poorly). Instead show with a beat: "Drop dead." The anger in her voice was unmistakable. You should avoid such tags as "Of course," he said knowingly (which has an ING and an LY). You may catch the LY and ING tags in the passivity check, which is discussed in Section 11. However, don't mistake the ING words when they're necessary, such as "Oh, that dialogue speech tag has a participle added to it," Marsha said, squinting at the underlined word on the page.

Yes, that's right, squinting is part of a participle phrase, which can be useful in speech tags.

What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?

My advice would be summed up by one word—Ergonomics.
I would shout ERGONOMICS into every new writer's ears if that would help. Why? Because if you are to become a producing writer, one who can turn out a 100,000 word novel every year (or two 50,000 word novels a year), or one short story every month, that means you'll be in front of a computer and typing.

Okay, so someone will dictate into a computer and someone else will write in longhand. It doesn't matter how it's done, at some point they'll be editing or self-editing on a computer. They will be sitting for long hours and typing which means they run the risk of repetitive tissue, muscle, and tendon damage.

I have been typing since I was seventeen and learned on a clunky, manual typewriter. I have earned my living as a secretary and spent forty hours a week, plus countless hours of overtime, pounding the keys of not only that manual but IBM Selectrics, Xerox Memorywriters, Wang Word Processors, and computers. Even now, as a writer, I spend anywhere from five to twelve hours a day at the keyboard. And yet, I have no RSI — Repetitive Stress Injuries because I had a typing teacher who instilled in me the reasoning behind sitting properly, the correct angles for my hands, head, and feet so I could earn a living.

Repetitive stress injuries occur when too much stress is placed on a joint. The severity of the stress occurs from heavy (i.e., hours) of computer, texting, and word processing. Such stress happens to the joints because tendons and muscles around the joint are constantly and repeatedly being flexed to the point of irritation. When the body does not have sufficient time to recover and make repairs, that leads to irritation. The body reacts by increasing the amount of fluid in that area to reduce the stress placed on the tendon or muscle. And therein lies discomfort that leads to the most common damage of— Carpal Tunnel Syndrome which is the swelling inside a narrow "tunnel" formed by bone and ligament in the wrist. That tunnel surrounds nerves which convey's sensory and motor impulses to and from the hand, leading to pain, tingling, and numbness.

But there are other RSIs—

1. Cervical radiculopathy where there is disk compression in the neck, often caused by the angle (poor posture) from looking at a screen or monitor for long hours.

2. Epicondylitis: elbow soreness known as "tennis elbow." Often a result of poor posture and too steep or too shallow an angle to the keyboard.

3.Tendonitis: tearing and inflammation of tendons connecting bones to muscles. Once again poor ergonomics (posture and too steep or shallow angles of the hands and arms) contribute to such damage.

Okay, I will confess—when I got my first computer, I experienced neck aches and headaches. I researched the ergonomics for computers. As soon as I reset my workspace, the aches were gone and never returned. As added insurance to stop future repetitive damage, I buy the best ergonomic chair I can afford. My current one was on sale—otherwise it would have been too expensive for my budget. It's designed after a race-car driver's bucket seat. It holds my back and hips in alignment. Even the arm rests are adjustable downward (normally I take off a task-office chair's arm rests because they force my arms to be held up too high, which strains my shoulders and neck).

Okay, so a chair is a must, so too is the proper height of the desk on which a computer keyboard and monitor reside. Because I always had secretarial desks with a lower wing area for the typewriter-keyboard, at home, my husband built me a simple desk of the right height for my typewriter and later my computer. When we moved into the farmhouse we now live in, and remodeled the kitchen, someone goofed up the measurements to a counter top. Rather than junk the piece, I had the contractor build me a set of bookshelves, at the correct desk height, and set the counter top over them. (The bookshelves gave me added storage.)

As to the monitor, it sets on a storage-type box, which puts the monitor at the right height and distance from where I sit.  I also installed a board under my printer stand for my computer's mouse (wireless). The printer is heavy enough to keep the board from moving. That board extends past my elbow so my entire forearm is supported.

And here is something else—I have, to the left of my keyboard—a touch pad mouse (wireless). Why? Because my left hand shares the load of moving and activating the cursor on the screen. Be assured, I am not ambidextrous. I merely want to take the strain from all the right-handed movements I'm forced to make because of the way the computer and computer programs area designed. The benefit of using two mice is faster commands, faster movements to menu items, and time saved when drafting and editing work.

If you intend to be a producing writer, take my advice—pay attention to the ergonomics that will save your body from repetitive injuries. Here are links to better understand ergonomics and drawings that show how you can withstand the riggers of being a producing writer:

Lovesick Gods by Amanda Meuwissen - Book Tour and Giveaway

About the Book

The elements touch everyone on Earth—Fire, Water, even Light—but every so often someone becomes more attuned to their elemental leaning and develops true power. When an evil Elemental known as Thanatos arrived in Olympus City, it saw the rise of its first hero—Zeus. But the death toll caused by defeating Thanatos changed Zeus, who by day is young detective Danny Grant.

It’s been six months since Thanatos terrorized the city at the start of Lovesick Gods. Danny should be used to his duty behind the mask, but the recent past haunts him. His girlfriend left him, he snaps at the barest provocation, his life feels empty—he needs an outlet, any outlet to pull him out of his depression.

Enter notorious thief Malcolm Cho, the Ice Elemental Prometheus. There was a time when Danny welcomed a fight with Cho, filled with colorful banter and casual flirtations that were a relief compared to Thanatos. Even as a criminal, Cho had recognized the threat Thanatos posed and promised to help Danny stop him, but the day Danny needed Cho, he never showed. Cho was the reason so many people died that day—including Danny’s mother.

Danny decides to teach the man a lesson and fan the fire of their attraction into something more. At worst, he’ll get some no-strings-attached sex out of the deal and finally blow off steam; at best, he’ll get Cho to fall in love with him and then break his heart to spite him. Danny doesn’t expect to fall for Cho in the process, and he certainly can’t predict the much darker threat on the horizon.

Excerpt

The sound of the bar door caught Mal’s attention. It was late for the lunch rush, so a new patron was curious. Craning his ears, he realized he recognized the approaching gait, the particular pattern of breathing. He gave credit to his element for his ability to observe his surroundings without a single ripple of unease to disturb his calm, but when the person breached the corner of the booth and slid in across from him, Mal couldn’t place why he should know the man so well.

He made a point of knowing most of the cops in the city who might give him trouble, so he recognized the clean-shaven face and sunset colored hair. The man was one of two detectives who’d run the Elemental Task Force when it formed after Thanatos’s arrival, but Mal had never met him.

“Detective Grant,” Mal nodded, not bothering to pause in devouring a French fry even as his free hand slid beneath the table and started to frost over in case Grant tried anything foolish.

“Quite the dive you got here, Ice Man,” the detective said.

Mal sat up straighter. Only one man dared greet him with that nickname, especially with such a familiar voice.

“Sparky?” he drawled with a slow grin, letting his powers dwindle as he returned his hand to the table. “My, my, so this is what Zeus looks like under that mask.” After more than half a year sparring on the streets, he thought he knew his nemesis well, but he’d expected someone older. Although, he had a feeling this kid wasn’t quite as young as his boyish looks implied. “Playing vigilante by night, Detective? What is the world coming to?”

“It’s Danny,” he said with a shift of his eyes around the mostly empty bar, which admittedly wasn’t the best place to be throwing around words like ‘detective’ or ‘Zeus’, “and I didn’t come here for banter.”

Mal downed another fry, more at ease now that he knew his nemesis sat across from him instead of some badge. Zeus made the game so much more fun. He wasn’t hard on the eyes either. “Pity. We’ve gotten so good at our banter. So…” Mal trailed a fresh French fry into his ketchup, “why are you here? Hoping I’d treat you to lunch to make up for that last bank heist?”

Danny folded his hands on top of the table, a serious expression filling his lightning-yellow eyes. “I want to make a deal.”

Excerpt

A casual knock pre-empted the arrival of an attending nurse. Sancha heard the sounds of a metal cart rolled in, its wheels locked in place at her bedside. She took a quick puff of air and released it as the knuckles of her fists began to turn white.

She heard a rustling of linens, then Maria leaning toward her from her chair on the opposite side of the bed.

Something heavy and warm was laid against Sancha’s arm.

“Sancha...” Maria pleaded this time. “Please.”

Sancha squirmed against the uncomfortable pressure on her arm.

“I can’t let you live the rest of your life,” Maria whispered, “knowing you never even saw him.”

Sancha swallowed. Her breathing quickened. She rolled her lips between her teeth. And she opened her eyes—as slowly as humanly possible.

The brightest pair of crystalline blue eyes stared back at her.

They blinked tenderly, giving away how new to blinking they actually were. Their steady gaze pierced straight through to something rooted within Sancha.

The eyes blinked again, temporarily cutting off the intense connection before opening again to resume it. Sancha rested on her bed in silence, mesmerized by the novice rhythm of blinking resembling Morse code.

Every muscle in her body relaxed. Her mouth began to form an unthinkable smile. She couldn’t help herself.

The baby—her baby—beamed at her with his big, round eyes and flooded her with the total contentment and perfect peace that wafts only from brand-new life.

Interview

Tell us about your book, what inspired it?

For The One Apart, I woke up one morning with just one interesting sentence in mind as an idea for a brand-new story: “he remembered everything.”  It felt really impactful, like the fact that this person remembered “everything” was a big deal, that it wasn’t supposed to happen, something went wrong, or maybe, someone would be really upset to discover this person did remember everything.  That was it.  And that’s my favorite part of writing.  I love having no idea what the story is and just writing to uncover it.  I wrote two scenes from that idea and set it aside because I was hoping to write a short story and I knew this idea was “a long one.”  And two years later, when I sat down to start writing my first novel, I picked up this story idea again. I knew this one was the idea to run with.

What should readers expect when they pick up your book?

The One Apart is more than a story—it’s an experience.  Expect a family saga, an adventure epic, lots of mystery and intrigue and eeriness.  Expect to delve in, “live” the story with the characters, to love or love to hate all the characters, and to laugh a little, cry a little, and definitely be drive to look over your shoulder to reassure yourself nothing’s there.  Expect to never be able to look at the world, life, and people around you the same way again.

Have you started your next project?

My next book will likely be a collection of shorter stories, all sharing a common element: the story of those big moments in life when everything changes, when everything turns in a new direction.  I have a few unpublished stories that happen to have that idea in common, and I’m eager to write more and create a collection full of interesting characters and predicaments and surprising moments.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing stories since I was about 7 years old when my second-grade English teacher required all her students to write a new story every week.  All my stories were true then, based on some childhood adventure I had over the summer or the weekend, and I remember the teacher praising them.  I also remember her forcing me to stand up in front of the class to read some of them—I was so shy!—and that made me want to start writing boring stories.  Years later, when I was still a kid, I started my first novel, handwritten in a spiral-bound notebook with a bright yellow cover.  It was essentially a retelling of the Cinderella story with a main character named Ella that—SURPRISE!—would be revealed as a secret Cinderella.  It’s a good thing I never finished it!  After that, I believed the folks that told me that writing is more of a dream and not really a career, so I only wrote sporadically when I was really moved to live my biggest dream, only for life and that “real career” to get in the way.  Finally, the urge to write, the feeling that you’re supposed to write, took over, and I finally gave my writing “dream” the priority it deserves.

What are your future ambitions?

More fantastic stories!  My interests are all over the place, and I love following my curiosity wherever it takes me.  I’ve got a list of little story idea nuggets much longer than life will give me time to write stories for and in just about every genre.  I will most definitely write more fiction, short and long, and great nonfiction stories as well.  And I’ll be checking off more countries yet-to-be-visited around the world.

What do you think of “trailers” for books?

I think the application of video for promoting books—and reading—is brilliant!  We should’ve started doing it a long time ago.  Specifically investing in a trailer for a book is tricky business though.  Creating a book trailer for the sake of having one might not offer any benefit to expanding a book’s readership or raising an author’s profile… unless it’s designed as the best film trailers are: as stories themselves.  Book trailers should tell a story.  They are short films, after all.

Anything else you might want to add?

I write to explore ideas and satiate my own curiosity.  I publish to share the story with others for your own enjoyment.  When it’s in your hands, it belongs to you.  There’s no intended lesson or meaning or ulterior motive; the novel is for you to interpret, for you to explore and discover.  So, I hope you enjoy the heck out of the adventure of reading it!

Thanks...

About the Author

Justine Avery is an award-winning author of stories large and small for all. Born in the American Midwest and raised all over the world, she is inherently an explorer, duly fascinated by everything around her and excitedly noting the stories that abound all around. As an avid reader of all genres, she weaves her own stories among them all. She has a predilection for writing speculative fiction and story twists and surprises she can’t even predict herself.

Avery has either lived in or explored all 50 states of the union, over 36 countries, and all but one continent; she lost count after moving 30-some times before the age of 20. She’s intentionally jumped out of airplanes and off the highest bungee jump in New Zealand, scuba dived unintentionally with sharks, designed websites, intranets, and technical manuals, bartered with indigenous Panamanians, welded automobile frames, observed at the Bujinkan Hombu Dojo in Noba, Japan, and masterminded prosperous internet businesses—to name a few adventures. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree that life has never required, and at age 28, she sold everything she owned and quit corporate life—and her final “job”—to freelance and travel the world as she always dreamed of. And she’s never looked back.

Aside from her native English, Avery speaks a bit of Japanese and a bit more Spanish, her accent is an ever-evolving mixture of Midwestern American with notes of the Deep South and indiscriminate British vocabulary and rhythm, and she says “eh”—like the Kiwis, not the Canadians. She currently lives near Los Angeles with her husband, British film director Devon Avery, and their three adopted children: Becks, Sam, and Lia. She writes from wherever her curiosity takes her.

Avery loves to connect with fellow readers and creatives, explorers and imaginers, and cordially invites you to say “hello”—or konnichiwa.

You Taste Like Whiskey and Sunshine by Kimberly Love - Book Tour and Giveaway

About the Book

There's an evil queen, a demented father, some amateur boxing and a trailer park story. Even a silver fox makes an appearance. Why wouldn't that entice you?

If you are looking for something different from the rest of the books out there, something that might make you question your sanity then you will love this book

Excerpt

You see, my father was evil—seriously evil. During his relationship with my mother, he brutalized her and some of my siblings in ways that she won’t speak about to this day. He was often filled with rage and that rage showed in his physical violence. His brutality was never just saved for my mother. He once punched out my five-year-old step-brother; literally punched him in the face. I couldn’t even imagine what that would be like for a small child. Miss B hated him so much that her hatred poured into me from the time that I was just a toddler. She couldn’t stomach the sight of me for the simple reason that I was a part of him.
These aren’t my memories and most of which I know is fragmented, as no one wanted to talk about the man. What I know of him was learned in piecemeal over the years.

He was the kind of man who would rather see you dead than see you leave. I’ve seen several men like that while watching Law & Order. It’s shocking to know that things like that actually happened in my own family. My mom is such a great woman that the thought of her being hurt is a little hard to take at times. When my mother finally decided to get us all away from him, she had to wait until he went to work. Then, she packed up our things and left home. There was no warning; no threats of leaving him. She knew what he was like and she knew it was best to slip out without telling him.

Interview

Tell us about your current release

You Taste Like Whiskey and Sunshine is a reminder that good things can come out of the ashes of terrible experiences. Despite betrayals, lies and heartbreak it’s possible for someone to crawl out and find redemption in a new life. You Taste Like Whiskey and Sunshine is written with unrestrained honesty and it forces you to ask yourself what it means to be happy and to discover your own worth.

Tell us about the cover and the inspiration for it

Gosh, the cover took a really long time to figure out. All I knew was that I wanted it to be simple. The cover designer was trying to convince me to put a picture of myself on the cover since the book is about my life but I was not at all comfortable about that. I’m a little shy at times. In the end, we decided to focus it around whiskey since the title is based on a guy I once knew so one thing led to another and it ended up bright yellow and looking pretty badass.

What exciting story are you working on next?

I’m just about finished a thriller actually, a story based on a serial killer that wreaked havoc in Thailand during the 90’s. I’m in the editing process, so I’m hoping to be finished it this year.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Read mostly or spend time with my daughter. I write so much that I don’t have a lot of time to read, so it’s refreshing to get into a new book. I love summer days outside with my girl though, time with family is the best.

What sacrifices have you had to make to be a writer?

Probably the finer things in life. I left a cushy job to write full-time and for a few years, it was a struggle. But I knew what I wanted in my life and now I make a lot of money doing it. So, I guess I can say it was worth it in the end.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Don’t give up. I know the struggle. I’ve lived as a “starving artist” for a while and it’s not fun by any means. But if you believe in yourself and really want to be a writer than I say never give up. It’s so much better to wake up and know that you are doing what you love.

Any last words?

I’m very thankful to everyone that has supported me through the good times and the bad. I’m able to do what I love because of that support. So, thank you.

Thanks...

The term “tidal locking” will make many of us think of tides, but these are unrelated phenomenon. Our moon is tidally locked to the Earth. The same side is always facing us because the moon rotates on its axis in the same number of days it takes to orbit us. This might seem coincidental and unique, but most significant moons in our solar system are tidally locked to their planet; those nearest experience this first. Tidal locking is an eventual result caused by gravity. Early in a moon’s orbiting, it might not be tidally locked, but ours may have become locked in as few as a hundred days (its proximity and size having much to do with this).  A moon that is not tidally locked may have recently formed or been captured by the planet. Either way, the stabilization process hasn’t completed.

As world builders, we have some leeway to claim a satellite is locked or not. Most people are unfamiliar with the concept and we should only mention it if locking has occurred, as readers will assume the opposite without being told. Note that a close, large moon like ours will almost certainly be locked; during the brief period when ours was not, it and the Earth were molten and devoid of life.

Normally, only the satellite is locked to the planet, but they can become mutually tidally locked, as happened with Pluto and its moon, Charon. This means that each of them only sees one side of the other. If we stood on our moon, we’d see all sides of Earth as it rotates, but from Earth, we see only one side of the moon because they are not mutually tidally locked. If they were, the moon would stay in the exact same spot in the sky. About half the planet would see it, while the other half wouldn’t even know it existed unless traveling to the far side of the world. This would eliminate most tides (see next section) except those caused by the sun.

Excerpt

Mr. Sheldon turned slowly, releasing Allison from his grip. “Excuse me,” he said softly, ominously, “what did you say?”

Maddy looked up, caught his menacing glare a moment before his face relaxed back into a more benign expression. Slowly, deliberately, he strolled back to the center of the room, placed his hands on his hips and tilted his head in mock confusion. Maddy’s grip tightened on her notebook until her knuckles whitened. Her stomach rolled, churned.

It was as if all noise was sucked out of the room, as if all the surrounding white walls absorbed every acoustic and left the room as bereft of noise as it was of color. She opened her mouth to answer but snapped it shut again under his intense scrutiny. He nodded to himself and pressed his lips together in irritation.

What would you like to tell readers about yourself

I’m on a mission. Kids need saving and I want to help. I’m a pediatrician and over the years I’ve seen a change in the reasons why children come to the office. It used to be sore throats, scrapped knees and ear infections. Now 25% of my visits are for depression, anxiety or behavioral problems. Over the years, we’ve adapted, learned to treat these children for conditions we once consider ‘adult’ problems.
But then I went to a conference and heard one of the speakers make a comment. He said that children keep throwing themselves into the river and pediatricians keep jumping in to save them. He stopped for a moment, giving us time to see the imagery, before continuing. Someone should go upstream and stop them from jumping in the first place, he pointed out.
  I have several goals.
I want to write books that empower children, especially girls. One half of girls will lose their confidence by puberty. That needs to change. I want to write books with characters who demonstrate persistence, strength, responsibility…honor. That’s right. I want to brainwash our children into believing they should have the same virtues.
Secondly, I want to donate to charities that help and protect children. All of the proceeds of this book go to the Children’s Advocacy Center where they work to convict sexual predators and counsel their child victims. Once you hear their stories, you can’t get them out of your head.
Lastly, I want to write great books. This only works if I do. I’ve read about writing, attended conferences, hired an editor…done my best to provide the reader with an enjoyable experience. One I hope they want to repeat….

Devil's Gamble by Michele Arris - Book Blast and Giveaway

About the Book

Sienna Keller saw how men used her mother, and from an early age she swore she’d never allow it to happen to her. So when she meets smooth-talking billionaire Gavin Crane, who uses his connections to help her art career, she resolves to keep things strictly professional—no matter how gorgeous he is.

Gavin might be the son of the head of the Kavanagh organized crime family, but he wants no part of that life. It’s important to him to prove to Sienna that he’s a good guy. But when she winds up in the hospital with a gunshot wound, he is driven to exact revenge. His father agrees to provide security to watch over her as well as find the man who shot her, but at a cost—Gavin must come back into the family business.

As Sienna begins to let her guard down around Gavin, seeing the kind, caring man he’s always wanted her to see, his secrets begin to pile up. Has she done the one thing she vowed never to do—trusted her heart to the wrong man?

Excerpt

“You have your room keycard?”

She pulled it from her black leather clutch purse. He took it from her, and with a quick swipe at the lock, opened, and stood just inside the room with his back braced flush against the door, giving her a wide area to pass without them making contact.

Just then her cell phone rang. She took it from her purse to view the display and quickly connected. “Hey. Hold on a moment.” Pressing the phone at her chest, she looked at Gavin, whose attention was laser focused on the phone in her hand. “I have to take this.”

“I’ll see you in the morning,” he said with little inflection as he reached to his right and set the keycard on the entry table, then his steady stare held hers briefly. “Sleep well.” He stepped out. The door closed quietly behind him.

Sienna waited for the resounding clank of the door across the hall before she let go a breath, and her pulse managed to calm. Wow. She’d expected he’d ask to come inside. A small part of her, that perverse side of her, wanted him to, only so she could turn him away. Turning down his invitation wouldn’t have been just because she felt he was a player or a pain in the ass on occasion, it was something else, some kind of deeply embedded feeling that her mind fought against.
