“Here.” She handed it to me and returned to her seat. “Put it on your face. You should use as little magic as you can, even to heal.”

“Is that your version of an apology?” I pressed the ice against the cheek Sera had slapped. I wasn’t bruising yet, but it was tender enough that it was only a matter of time. Sera hadn’t pulled that punch.

“Did you hear me use either the words ‘I’m’ or ‘sorry’? Then no.”

I made a face in her general direction, then made a second face when the movement pulled at my swelling cheek.

“What else could I have done?”

“Nothing! You do nothing, Aidan. Damn it. I’ve lost too many people already. Our father. Christopher. Hell, I’ve been losing people my whole life.”

She paused, swallowing whatever she’d been about to say. Sera rarely spoke of her mother, who died when she was just thirteen. Elementals were long-lived, but we weren’t immortal. Any sudden trauma could kill us as easily as it would a human.

When she spoke again, her words were measured. “I’m not losing anyone else. I don’t care if I have to burn those council assholes myself.”

“You’re not a killer, Sera. You’d never be the same.”

She held my eyes, her own so serious I barely recognized them. “But I’d be sane. Can you say the same thing?”

She was right, and at the same time she was so very wrong. “You know who you sound like?”

One side of her mouth quirked in the tiniest of smiles. “What can I say? Like father, like daughter.”

“Daughters,” I corrected. “And if we’re not careful, we’re all going to die in our efforts to protect each other.”

Excerpt

“I won’t help you,” Matthew said, “no matter what you do to me.”

“Oh, but I think you will,” Daniel disagreed. “Once I turn you, then you’ll be more than happy to help.” Lightning swift, the vampire lashed out and seized Matthew’s wrist, forcing the priest’s arm down.

Matthew cried out in pain as Daniel squeezed his wrist until his hand opened and the crucifix dropped to the ground.

Aiden shouted and swung her crucifix around to protect Matthew, but she was too slow. Daniel dragged Matthew away and thrust the priest toward his minions.

“Hold him,” Daniel said.

Immediately, the carrot-topped boy and the policewoman caught hold of the priest.

Aiden expected Daniel’s attack, but that didn’t prepare her for the vampire’s speed. Daniel rushed her, progressing so fast his contorted face filled her vision. She kept the crucifix level and aimed for the vampire’s eyes, but Daniel caught hold of her wrist with disturbing ease. Then he twisted her arm, causing a wrenching pain in her shoulder. Against her will, Aiden bent over to avoid having her arm torn from the socket. She lost her grip on her crucifix.

“Let her go!” Matthew shouted. “She’s done nothing.”

Daniel immobilized Aiden, ignoring her struggles. He forced her head to the side and exposed her throat. “Oh, I don’t think so. I want you to suffer, Matt,” he said. “As a self-styled Lord of the Night, I’m rather pleased with the revenge I’ve concocted. So I’m going to eat your pretty daughter and make you watch.”

Chapter 5: An Excursion

The coach was making its way, belching black exhaust. It went slowly, making short stops so that the children could admire the beautiful scenery along the way. No one was in any great hurry. They went through green tea and coffee plantations; through tiny villages where the inhabitants, barely awake, were setting off to their jobs. The children, in a fever of enthusiasm with their new found sense of adventure, excitedly danced and sang on the bus. Such excursions were rare. Without their families, they were going to experience a new freedom that would last two days!
