Girl of Mine by Taylor Dean - Book Blast and Giveaway

About the Book

HE CAME HOME

The year is 2003 and Captain Lucas Graham is at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, about to be deployed to Iraq. A few weeks ago, he broke his engagement with Jillian Barrett, leaving her stunned and heartbroken.

Knowing he can’t leave for war without putting his affairs in order, Luke obtains a four day pass with only one goal in mind: explain his life story to his former fiancée.

The problem: Jill is now engaged to another man.

But Luke isn’t giving up. He only has four days to gain an audience with Jill, even if he has to resort to drastic measures to do so.

And he will . . .

A interesting tidbit about GIRL OF MINE:

My dad always worried about the cost of the electricity bill. If he walked past my bedroom and noticed that my light had been left on, he would turn it off and holler,
“That’s okay, Taylor, I got your light.”

It became a bit of a joke in our household. My siblings and I loved to try and catch my dad leaving on a light, just so we could say,
“That’s okay, Dad, I got your light.”

Now that I’m an adult with my own family, the term takes on new meaning.
The message behind it has worked its way into my new novel, Girl of Mine.

My father brought me into this world, he cared for me, and he taught me well. He gave me my “light,” my life.
He nourished my “light” and helped me become the person I am today.
So, Dad, thanks for getting my light.
I’ll always be grateful.

He paced the room, sweat dripped down his back, and his hands shook as he stared at the paperwork he just came across. He glanced at the clock it was one in the morning. Fuck it. He snatched up his phone and dialled his friend’s number.

“Fuck, Hudson,” he hissed as the phone went to voice mail. He hung up and re-dialled.

“It’s after midnight you better have something good John or––”

“Hudson!” John yelled out and kicked the wall in front of him, “I think...I––I came across something––something big.”

“Ok, you’ve got my attention what is it?”

John pulled apart the blinds to look outside at the rainy night. “No not here not on the phone. Meet me in the park our usual spot.”

He heard Hudson getting dressed, “Fuck me John, if this isn’t good I’m––”

“It is. I think the government may have fucked up.”

Hudson laughed, “What else is new? Please tell me you have solid proof.”

“I’m holding the fucking evidence in my hand!” John shouted again.

“How big is this?” Hudson’s car engine rang through the phone.

John started to shove the papers and USB which contained live video from two days ago into his bag, “This makes the Roswell look like a joke.”

Grace Revealed: A Memoir by Greg Archer - Book Tour and Giveaway

About the Book

GREG ARCHER is an author, cultural moderator, award-winning journalist, television host and motivational speaker. His latest book, GRACE REVEALED: A MEMOIR, goes from glitz to the Gulags as the popular entertainment reporter takes a step back from Hollywood to explore his Polish family’s mesmerizing tale surviving Joseph Stalin’s mass deportation of Poles during the 1940s. What he uncovers along the way fuels his mission to not only expose the nearly forgotten odyssey that befell nearly 2 million Poles 75 years ago, but to also expose the ripple effects that remain today.

Excerpt

How had my family served me by example?

As I slipped into the front seat of my very low-resting Mazda Miata, cursing the fact that despite nearly a decade of Bikram Yoga, middle age was beginning to have its way with my Polish hips, I thanked the Universe for the interview. And, seeing that I had arrived at such a dramatic turning point—bored; how could you be bored?—I naturally asked for a sign on what I needed to do.

The broken picture frames flashed before my eyes.

I had been given a sign months ago. How many more signs did I need to receive? The message was clear: “Look at your family; look at their past.”

What? Did I want a much more flashy sign? Something like, “Hey, you’re going to be on the receiving end of buckets of cash if you turn right instead of left at the next traffic light?”

Yes. Yes I did want that sign.

Still, when The Powers That Be instruct you to do something, you must do it. I had avoided doing what I was told and now I was weary, tired, listless and unhappy.

I turned the key in the ignition and sighed in frustration.

How the hell did I get here?

Interview

Tell us about your book, what inspired it?

Grace Revealed rose from the depths of my Polish family’s experience during the 1940s. They were among nearly one million other Polish people who were deported to Siberia and sent into labor camps. Growing up, I was always inspired by the family’s survival story, particularly my grandmother’s strength and resolve, and I felt led to write about it. The memoir chronicles my journey uncovering their journey—a kind of David Sedaris meets a Polish Alex Haley if you will.

What is your favorite scene in the book?

There are a few—for the lighthearted, I would say that toward the end of the book, when I am in Poland and going through a series of serendipitous events, that that was indeed fun to write about. For the more serious side, I would say there’s a chapter in the middle of the book which finds my grandmother searching for a loved one’s grave, and how that all unfolds is quite dramatic and moving.

How did you get into writing?

I began writing in grade school, and then in high school, moved into journalism, taking that to college as well. It grew from there.

Do you listen to music when you're writing?

Often—mostly Buddha Bar radio or something trippy or hypnotic like that.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

There are a few more books within me, so a great deal of focus will go toward that.

Have you started your next project?

Yes. The next book revolves around home and place, but there are also works in development—one-man show and a film for Grace Revealed, too.

Any last words?

Last words? Well, I always encourage people to learn more about their family’s past, because, inevitably, it offers an opportunity to learn more about oneself. There’s some richness to be found in exploring one’s ancestry.

Best Friends Forever by Krysten Lindsay Hager - Book Blast and Giveaway

About the Book

Landry Albright hopes the new year will start off in an amazing way—instead she has to deal with more frenemy issues, boy drama, and having most of her best friends make the cheerleading squad without her. Suddenly, it seems like all anyone can talk about is starting high school next year—something she finds terrifying.

Landry gets her first boyfriend (her crush, Vladi), but then gets dumped just as things come to a head with her friends. She feels lost and left out, but finds good advice about dealing with frenemies from what she considers an unlikely source. Landry faces having to speak up for what’s right, tell the truth (even when it hurts), and how to get past the fear of failure as she gets another shot at competing in the American Ingénue TV show modeling competition. Will she get a second chance with her friends, fame, and Vladi?

Praise

“For girls Landry’s age it’s wonderful to see that they aren’t alone and this book is giving them some very useful advice. It’s a fun story to read as well. I like that it’s so realistic.”

“I wish I could give this more stars. This book brought back so many incredible memories, things that I haven’t thought of in a long, long time. It was a well told story of a young woman who is discovering who she is without being cheesy or preachy.”

“…I LAUGHED SO HARD it was ridiculous! LOVED THIS BOOK.”

Excerpt

“Landry, it’s gotta be so awkward for you to be going to Vladi’s school next year,” Tori said. “I mean, what if you run into him during the tour?”

“It’s a huge place,” Ashanti said. “People break up all the time. It’s not a big deal.ʺ

Tori raised her eyebrows as if to say, “Yeah, right,” and went back to her sandwich.

Meanwhile my delicious homemade soup was no longer sitting well. It never occurred to me Vladi might be around during the first pre‑freshman tour. I would be mortified if I ran into him and he was with a girl. Or worse yet, running into him, and he was with Yasmin. Plus, I hadn’t told my mom about the breakup, so if she saw him, she’d probably go over to talk to him. I could already imagine it: “Landry, Vladi’s here! Hon? Why are you hiding behind the garbage can? Your boyfriend, Vladi, is here. Come say, ‘hello.’ Stop trying to run away. Why is everyone laughing and pointing at you and calling you a ‘loser dumpee?’ What does that mean?”

Well, maybe the world would end and I wouldn’t have to deal with high school or Vladi and my mother running into each other.

****

Sadly, the world did not end, and on Thursday, we all had to go to the high school for a freshman information night from 6 to 9 p.m.
